You have many options for packaging your products, including sachet packaging and larger Mylar pouches. Mylar offers benefits for long-term storage because it keeps food fresh and is resistant to insects. If you package your food product in Mylar, it is more convenient for your customers because they can store the product in the package it came in.
1. Great for Wheat, Flour, and Rice
Rice and wheat are grains that contain carbohydrates that provide lots of energy. Flour is a grain that has been ground up so that it can be used for baking. Any type of grain can be ground to make flour, but when the word “flour” is used on its own, it is generally understood to mean wheat flour. If made from another grain, the name of the grain is usually included for differentiation.
The best foods to store in Mylar bags are those that have a low moisture content, ideally less than 10%. Brown rice doesn’t store well long term because of its high moisture and oil content, but dehydrated white rice is a good candidate for Mylar storage.
While you can store both flour and whole grains in Mylar, flour does not last as long in storage once it has been ground. For example, you can only store flour in Mylar for about five years, while whole wheat can remain in storage for at least 30 years. Generally speaking, whole grains store better and longer than flour.
2. Storing Dehydrated Fruits and Veggies
Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, a vital nutrient. Vitamin C deficiency can cause symptoms of fatigue, joint pain, susceptibility to bruising, rough skin, and tooth loss. It is possible to store fruits and vegetables in Mylar, but only if they have been completely dehydrated, with all the water removed. You can tell that a fruit or vegetable has been completely dehydrated if it snaps when pressure is applied to it rather than merely bending. For storage of dehydrated fruits and vegetables in Mylar to be safe and most effective, the package has to include an oxygen absorber.
3. Powdered Milk
Milk contains calcium, which is essential for keeping bones strong. It is possible to store full-fat powdered milk in custom printed Mylar bags for three to five years. This includes baby formula.
Barley is a soft grain that is popular with health food enthusiasts because it is loaded with nutrients. In traditional packaging, barley has a shelf life of about a year and a half to two years. When stored in Mylar with an oxygen absorber, barley can last up to 10 years.
Quinoa is a grain that is high in protein and free of gluten, with a low glycemic index, meaning that it does not raise blood sugar. This makes it a good grain for people who are health conscious or have dietary restrictions, and it is a good grain to keep in storage in case of an emergency. It can last eight to 10 years in Mylar.
6. Bouillon Cubes
Bouillon cubes add flavor to soups, stews, and stocks. They are high in salt, so they don’t spoil, but storing them in Mylar ensures freshness.
